Testing is key to understanding the language level and subsequent acquisition and retention of a student. Additionally, many EFL students will go on to take external tests which may have an important effect on their future. It is thus important placement tests are used to place students in the appropriate course for their level and desires, that a diagnostic test be done early in the unit in order for the teacher to see what particular areas the student excels or needs assistance in, that regular progress tests be done to see what has been learned and what still lacks, and that a final test demonstrate how much the student has grown, and where further work may be needed.
