Unit 12 introduces teaching productive skills.
Both speaking and writing are equally important. A teacher must arouse the need and the desire in his/her students to practise communication. He/she should incorporate both accuracy and fluency activities in class to practise correct language as well as the effectiveness and flow of the communication. Controlled and guided activities in the study phase focus mainly on accuracy, whereas creative communication activities in the activate phase intend to improve fluency. Different techniques help to encourage students to interact using their productive skills, because students may be reluctant to talk and write freely right away. When focussing on writing skills, handwriting, spelling, and layout and punctuation need to be monitored specially. Finally, games can be a very effective tool to promote students’ productive skills.
I especially find the “guidelines for a free / creative speaking activity” interesting because they point all the detailed steps out that I must take care of and include in preparation, during and after the activity. This has widened my understanding of teaching this special productive skill.
