As with all aspects of teaching ESL, the choosing and adaption of ESL materials requires the teacher to think about both the target language and grammar, and the needs, goals and desires of the class. Authentic English materials, prepared materials and coursebooks, and creations by the teacher themselves can all be used in a class, but their application must be suited to the level of the students.
Authentic materials give students a very good idea of what to expect when in an English-language situation and thus have advantages in grammar and vocabulary. They can also be more difficult for beginners and lower intermediate students still lacking in vocabulary and many grammatical structures. ESL specific materials are often very suited to their particular tasks (specific vocabulary or grammatical structures), but may lack in interest as most are created for a generalized audience. If a teacher is attentive, their created materials can address that issue while remaining targeted and relevant.
When choosing a coursebook, it is important to ensure students will have access to purchase it, that it is not too expensive, and that the majority of what is in the book will actually be useful to the course and students. Nothing is less appealing than an expensive book rarely used.
