Unit 3 teaches important theories, methods, and techniques for language classes. It begins with an overview of different methodologies. All of them have their own advantages and disadvantages and may be used at certain points during the teaching process. But the best way to start with as a new teacher is ESA (Engage-Study-Activate), for it is both very effective and very logical. It’s based very much on the idea of elicitation, which means that students are involved as much as possible in a lesson. Elicitation helps the teacher to activate the students’ existing knowledge and to know their needs. ESA starts with the Engage stage when students are “warmed up” and when their interest is aroused. The Study stage focusses on new language and construction of language. Exercises help to reinforce the new skills. The Activate stage wants students to use all their language skills and to integrate new language skills into their talking. This phase intends to help students to get fluent in speaking English. I’ve also realized how important correction is, but that positive feedback is at least as important, too, if it’s not even more essential to motivate and improve the students’ English skills.
