The lesson covers the two areas of language that are focused on in language learning: Receptive Skills and Productive Skills. The unit states that one communicates because one has a purpose, something to say, wants to listen or are interested in what is being said.. The teacher needs to elicit the need and desire in the students to communicate. It is important to focus on accuracy and fluency but at different phases of the lesson. One is more concerned with accuracy during the study phase and with fluency during the activate phase. The unit then gave examples of both accuracy and fluency activities. It is important to use various strategies to get students to talk as they may lack confidence, interest in the topic or for cultural reasons are reticent or feel intimidated or do not have the necessary experience. Techniques are given in the unit to encourage student interaction. an example of a Straight Arrow lesson on weather was outlined. Subsequently, guidelines for creative speaking activities were listed. Examples of things to do to maintain interest and achieve the aims of the lesson were given. The importance of feedback and correction were noted and emphasized as essential while avoiding acts that would discourage or inhibit the student's effort to learn the language.. Writing skills were contrasted with that of speaking skills and the importance of spelling, penmanship, and styles of writing were discussed. Another lesson on weather forecast was outlined using the Straight-Arrow technique. And, the importance of games in the classroom (Corporative or Competitive) as creative communication activities used as warmers or during the activate stage of the lesson was emphasized.
