In this unit I learned about pronunciation and phonology. Usually, pronunciation is the most neglected aspect of English language teaching, because teachers generally lack trust and training to teach it. However, pronunciation teaching gives life to the class (it expresses feelings and personal reactions) so it's important to practice it. For practicing intonation you can use these resources: - Non-sense words (they help to speak with expression) - The board (draw straight or angled arrows to indicate the direction of intonation in a sentence) - Gestures (rise or lower your hand to indicate if a sentence starts with a high or low pitch). - Humming and singing sentences out. Intonation is important because it carries the message in a sentence. The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is rise/fall intonation. If your intonation falls, it means you finished talking. If your intonation falls and then rise it means you are surprised or that you disagree with something. If your intonation is flat you probably don’t want to talk. For practicing stress you can use these techniques: - Contrastive stress (a voiced sound v/s a non-voiced sound) - Gestures (like clapping your hands or tapping in your desk) - Stress marks - Underline the stressed words in a sentence, etc. Stress focuses on syllables. The ones that convey essential information are stressed. Sounds in English can be classified by place of articulation (dental, velar, palatal, glottal, etc.) and manner of articulation (plosive, nasal, affricative, etc.).
