Unit 13 covers the topic of teaching pronunciation, and how an effective teacher considers that an integral part of a course, even though it is often overlooked. It also addresses phonology, or the study, science, analysis, and classification of physical properties of sound. The areas of stress, rhythm, and intonation are discussed. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch of the entire sentence and carries the message, whereas stress focuses more on individual words. The unit explains the various intonation patterns of rise/fall, fall/rise, and flat. In a sentence, the word that bears the main emphasis is the stressed word. There is only one primary stress per word, and only syllables, not individual vowels or consonants, can be stressed. Sounds may be joined together in English words in four main ways: linking, sound dropping, sound changing, and extra lettering. Linking words and speech is common among native English speakers and will make the language learner's speech sound much more natural. The phonemic alphabet is also addressed. This is a series of symbols that form each sound and are put together to make the phonetic spelling of a word.
