This chapter outlines how vocabulary, grammar, and function lessons compare to one another. Each requires a different approach depending on the content and level of the class. A low level class might benefit from a straight arrow approach during a lesson about household item vocabulary. Classes focusing on grammar at a higher level might be better served by a boomerang type ESA lesson, and function based classes are most effectively taught using a patchwork style lesson, so that students repeatedly have the opportunity to activate. Grammar and function are in part better fit to boomerang and patchwork style lessons because they incorporate all three elements by necessity. For example, a function lesson about ordering food requires a basic knowledge of restaurant vocabulary and the grammar to express and clarify orders, which may need to be revisited during study phases.
