In Unit 9, the points I found most beneficial were in deciphering between the different materials, what I can use them for, and also making my own decision about what materials I would like to use now with my students upon successful completion of this TEFL training. For me personally, after reading the benefits of each one, I've decided to take an eclectic approach when choosing materials for my students. It sounds like taking this stance would be most advantageous to each of my students and to the class as a whole. Being a beginner teacher myself, I will use the text book as my own guide, especially so I don't have to create my own syllabus. Also, the book and the syllabus have already been tested for the specific level I'll be teaching. This makes it a whole lot easier until I become more proficient with the materials and gain experience in knowing what works best for both my students and myself. Although the course book will have a classroom-use textbook, a workbook, cassettes, videos, and a teacher's book (including tests), I do think I will need to supplement, adapt and sometimes even replace the material in the coursebook. This will assist in maintaining student's interest so they are unable to predict the lesson and become bored. I realize that in order to get the best course book, I'll need to carefully analyze things like price, availability, design, methodology, difficulty skills, syllabus, topic, teacher's guide, and auxiliary materials. Correct analysis of a text book will ultimately provide both my students and I with more structure, security and a balance between grammar, vocabulary and skills work. Additionally from Unit 9, I learned some new, useful, and immediately applicable lesson materials which include role-playing cards such as having the students speak on the phone to make a doctor's appointment. This could easily be adapted to a hair appointment or a dental appointment for example. I loved this unit as it provided many examples from which I can be creative as a teacher, and in the end, this will increase the motivation and interest of my students!
