In Unit 7, we learn about the two receptive skills reading and listening, five different specialist techniques and selection of topics. Reading and listening can be done for a purpose like in order to learn something or for entertainment and pleasure. We also learn about the five different specialist skills readers and listeners employ which depend on their expertise in order to understand the context. The five different skills are predictive which is predicting the content based on the headline of the text or article. Next is the specific information scanning where the reader searches quickly only for a particular information or story one is interested about. Third is the general idea or skimming, which is reading or listening for the gist of the text/dialogue. Fourth comes the detailed information reading where we read in order to understand everything in details. Lastly, we have the need to be able to understand or deduce the meaning of individual words or phrases from the context we hear/read. Lastly we learned that teachers need to pick a selection of topic that are both authentic giving students confidence in their skills and non authentic allowing the students to discover the language on their own. It is important that teachers create a balance as well as pick a variety of topics over a period of time that cater to all students in the end.
