This unit was about testing and assessments for English language learners and even included some sample test materials. One of the main points of this chapter is that testing should be done towards the beginning of class via a placement or diagnostic test, or prior to the start of a course, so that proper placement of students (to the correct course level) can be made, but also that testing should continue throughout the year - even if these tests are not extensive. It went over the uses of practice tests, assessments, and extrenal exams such as the TOEFL, Trinity College of London ESOL test, the TOEIC, and the Cambridge family of tests. This chapter stressed the fact that with any type of test or assessment of English language skills or progress in learning, there should a spoken component (in addition to a written and/or multiple choice component), and some type of free-form section that involves the student expressing him/herself verbally or in written format.
