Unit 20 discusses common problems that may arise when teaching. The first lesson a teacher has with a group can be intimidating, but should be used to help build rapport with students, learn a bit about them, find out what their needs and goals are with studying English, and find out what their language level is. Another issue is when students in a class are at varying levels of English. Some methods for dealing with this include splitting a group into two sections for the stronger and weaker students and using different materials; use the same materials, but give different tasks depending on the level; let students find their own level, although stronger students may become bored and weaker students frustrated; and pairing stronger students with weaker ones to help explain and clarify things. Another issue is large classes, where you may try to get all students involved, with worksheets, repetition drills, or pair/group work. If students are often using their native language, it's probably because they don't understand well. You should make sure instructions are clear, materials are at an appropriate level, and only respond in English. Pair work, role play, and controlled practice may help with reluctant students, another common issue.
