This first unit gave me a basic understanding of the various roles of the teacher in the classroom. I learned that a successful teacher has to play a variety of roles--managing, modeling, facilitating, etc--all of which are essential to helping students learn English. This unit also explained various factors that would determine how students learn. An especially important factor is the age of the students--whether they are adults, young adults, or children. I learned a classification scheme for different levels of English ability, and how to determine a student's level.
