In Unit 8, we learn about the two productive skills speaking and writing. Mostly it is seen that writing is neglected over speaking in classrooms because it is considered quiet time. We also learn about the three different types of speaking activities in the classroom, which include controlled, guided activities and creative communication. Controlled are based on drilling the language. Whereas, guided activities are more accuracy based and include activities like model dialogues and guided role-play. Lastly, creative communications are fluency-based activities, which can include debates, free role-play, and information gap and communication games. We also often face students with lack of confidence and those that have fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation and lacking interest in the topic in which teachers can do a variety of things to make them feel comfortable such as adding pair-work, or group work in the lesson. As well as doing plenty of controlled and guided practices before the fluency activities so that the students can be rest assured they know the topic. Its also important to provide positive feedback and encourage possible improvements and have students practice any reoccurring errors made so they can improve. Lastly we learn in this unit how to teach writing, as far as handwriting is concerned that should be always encouraged to be improved for the benefit of the student, other than that it is a personal issue and each student has their own voice. Therefore mostly it is important to focus on spelling and pronunciation of the words because that can be difficult for foreign language student especially those students that have languages where like English we don’t have multiple words that sound the same but mean completely different things and are spelled differently. Lastly, in this unit we end with reading about the importance of games in the English Language and how helpful it is to add them to the lessons because they make the classes more exciting as well as help the students learn the language quickly. Overall, this was a great lesson in terms of teaching speaking and writing skills. This lesson encouraged me to look beyond pictures when teaching speaking and writing but to include games as well which most online courses offer to student this chapter further gave me more ideas we can use to enhance our classes by looking at a range of different activities and games so students can feel free to express more of themselves using the English Language.
