Unit 16 discusses conditionals and reported speech. Conditionals are sentences that contain "if/when" which refer to past, present and future possibilities. The "if" clause contains the condition which must be met before the action or state in the main clause can occur. There are five main conditionals. The zero conditional is used to express facts or general truths, and both clauses are in the present tense. In first conditional, the "if" clause is in the present tense and the other clause uses the future tense. This is used for real and possible situations. In the second conditional, we use the past tense in the "if" clause and the modal verb "would" (or may/might/etc) in the second clause. This is used to express unreal or hypothetical situations. In the third conditional, the "if" clause uses the past perfect tense and the second clause uses the modal verb "would" again and the present perfect form. This is the past hypothetical conditional...both clauses are talking about the past, but neither actually happened. A mixed conditional mixes the third and second conditionals. The "if" clause uses the past perfect (as in the third conditional), and the second clause uses the modal verb "would" plus the base form of the verb (as in the second conditional). Only the situation in the "if" clause relates to the past. The unit also covers direct and reported speech. Direct speech is what was actually said at a particular time. Reported speech changes the speech from a present tense to a past tense so you can tell someone what was said after a period of time has passed.
