I was somewhat surprised to see the TEFL course teach about course books in such an honest way. Often, the official course books are not in control of the ESL teacher and can be used as a crutch to mask unpreparedness. I found the guidelines on the four options for textbook use to be of good use as it can help shape a teacher's creativity when using a course book; for example, where a teacher might look at a course book lesson and decide that it's not suitable for the target language, they may try to replace the lesson with a similar lesson of their own instead of immediately omitting it.
