This unit broke down the form, usage, typical errors and activities associated with all present tenses, including present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. Present simple is used with habitual actions, facts, commentaries, instructions, headlines, historical sequences and present stories. Typical errors are usually in regards to incorrect formation of the verb. Present continuous uses the auxiliary verb to be and the present participle of the main verb. However there are some verbs that are not normally used in the continuous form such as verbs of the senses, mental activity, possessions and feelings. Teaching ideas include telling stories, developing situations and miming or demonstrating actions. Present perfect is used when people are talking about finished actions with an indefinite time, completed past actions that are unfinished, describing actions with present results and talking about something that began in the past and is true now. Finally present perfect continuous is used to relate past activities to the present, which implies that the activity is likely to continue in the future. Overall, each tense has unique forms, usages, errors and activities that teachers must be aware of to guide students through the density of learning verb forms.
