Unit 18 is about modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. Modal auxiliary verbs (can, could, should, may, might, etc) are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. They express the speaker's feeling or attitude. Main usages for the modals are: ability, advice, deduction, obligation, offer, permission, possibility, prediction, prohibition, promise, and request. Modals have no tense and you have to use or adapt the main verb to express tense or time. The unit discusses the active and passive voice as well. In the passive voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. The sentences may have the same meaning, but the focus is different. In the active voice, the focus is on the agent ("doer" of the action). The passive voice is used for an unknown or unimportant agent, to change the focus, or to conceal the agent. Finally the unit discusses phrasal verbs. These are multi word verbs consisting of a verb plus one or two particles. A particle may be a preposition, and adverb, or and adverb plus a preposition and they operate as one item.
