Unit 20 discussed the common problems that teachers may face when meeting a class for the first time. They may either be introduced to a "New group" or an "Existing group". A new group is a group of students that don't know each other and will have to get to know each other eventually. An existing group is quite the opposite. Teachers can establish rapport with classes, not by starting grammar lessons right away, but with games or other ideas to initiate conversation between students and the teacher. Warmers are what the teacher should use to get the students warmed up for English lessons instead of going straight into a difficult language lesson. Tongue twisters are what some teachers like to use. In this unit I also learned that classes can vary in size, large or small. Using worksheets, arranging groups and appointing groups leader's will help the teacher with maintaining successfully large classes. It is also important to minimize the use of the students native language, but to encourage only the use of English. With reluctant students who may not be comfortable with using English, the teacher should allow them to pair with other students, so that they can practice in a safe environment without feeling pressured to speak in front of a larger audience.
