In Unit 18, emphasis was placed on grammar. Modal auxiliary verbs were discussed in detail. Can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't, and ought to were listed. The cases when they are used were explained (e.g. obligation, formality). Teaching ideas were provided, too. One of them is role play, another one is discussing rules. Passive voice was distinguished from active voice. The form and usage of passive voice were well explained, and typical student errors and mistakes were mentioned. One teaching idea recommended was giving a general knowledge quiz to students. Both defining and non-defining relative clauses were described. The major difference between them was highlighted with examples. Phrasal verbs were also part of this unit. Intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable cases were introduced with examples. Ideas to teach phrasal verbs were choosing a particular subject and teaching the phrasal verbs regarding to that subject (e.g. driving), or letting students hear the phrasal verbs in several contexts until they start using them in a natural way for themselves.
