When teaching language, the preferred method is the Engage - Study - Activate method. This method can be used for all levels of learners and is adaptable, and can be taught in various orders, to suit the topic being taught and the language level of the learner(s). The basic premise is to engage the learner in the language topic through a warm-up activity which prompts recall of what they already know about a topic. Then, during the Study phase, the teacher will elicit responses from the learner about the topic through an elicitation activity. Corrections in grammar, sentence structure, and pronunciation would be made at the time errors are made. This is also when there will be a teacher directed lesson about a language point and drilling exercises to ensure understanding. Any written work done at this time will be reviewed by the teacher and feedback will be given regarding errors. In the activate phase, the students are encouraged to speak feely and to communicate using everything they know of the language. The focus is on fluency. This is often done though games or role-play activities. This is very similar to the teaching method I use in my 5th grade classroom. I always start with some form of warm-up to get the students interested. Then we learn the information they need to know. Last they take the information and use it to create something, or play a game with a partner, or write an essay that uses the new information in connection with what they already know. While errors are corrected, I also ask questions to help the students correct wrong answers themselves.
