Unit 15 covered the evaluation and testing of students. The different kinds of evaluation which were mentioned were tutorials, evaluation by students, and tests. Since tests are a typical way to evaluate students' knowledge, they were discussed in details. Placement tests are designed to be conducted before the course starts, since they help to estimate the student's initial level of English. They most probably have both written and spoken parts. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests but they can be more extensive. They help to determine what the student already knows and what he or she does not know yet. Progress tests are conducted periodically, at the end of a topic, or maybe weekly or monthly. They help the teacher see what the students learnt from the current part of the curriculum. Practice tests are designed to help students prepare for external exams (e.g. TOEFL). They help the student to get used to the structure of the exam, and to see how close he or she is to the required standard. There are general external examinations such as TOEFL or IELTS. Cambridge Assessment provides both general and specific exams. General Cambridge exams are provided at all levels from an elementary level (KET) to a proficient level (CPE). Specific Cambridge language exams are the Business English tests for example.
