In Unit 10, I learned the content of evaluation and testing in English. There are 3 major ways that we can evaluate students’ language level: Tutorials, Evaluation by the students and test. Tutorial evaluation is more informal and can take place with whole group and individual students. In school, I normally would spend the last couple minutes to review the language point and ask students’ feedback to check whether or not we have covered the skills and knowledge in the lessons and got to the target of learning aim. Also, I might be conferencing students individually to talk about their successes and weaknesses. Evaluation can be done by students themselves. This would help build their awareness of what is going on in the class. Normally, students are quite honest. This would help me understand better how they react to what I have done in the class. There are many different types of tests existing in English teaching. We can consider the purpose and the stages of teaching to carry out test. At the start of teaching, we can use placement test and diagnostic test to know students’ prior knowledge of certain language knowledge and skills and help grouping the students for differentiated teaching. When we have covered certain amount of language point, we would like to know how well the students have remembered or acquired from our teaching, we can implement periodic test or progress tests. One thing I need to remember is that, progress tests is aimed to encourage students to have an awareness of their next steps and how they can do to improve. If we want to see the achievement of our students, we can use internal test given at the end of a course or at the end of the school year. There are many different types of external examination as well. These types are normally not course related, but are useful to measure proficiency in English at particular area and levels. When I suggest my students for entering these tests, I can use the knowledge of them to give a good recommendation.
