In this unit I learned about how to manage a class. First I read about how the gestures, voice and eye contact are important for a teacher, e.g: gestures are important to avoid unnecesary teacher talking time and to indicate if an answer is good or bad, eye contact is good to keep order and it should be used when the activities are teacher centered; as for the voice, it's important to change it naturally, depending on what the objective of the class is. With regard to grouping students, there are 4 ways in which they can be grouped: - whole-class grouping: the students feel they belong to a group, but it can be off-putting to students who are shy (they have to speak in front of the class). - pairwork: more student talk time, but the students can start talking in their native tongue. - students working on their own: it's good for students who feel more comfortable just talking to the teacher and it makes them be more self-reliable, but it reduces talk time with other students - groupwork: it's good for students talk time and allows them to dicuss and negotiate but it can be rather noisy. Also, there are 3 types of clases arrangements: - Horseshoe/circle - rows - separate tables The way you group students and how you arrange the clase will depend on the classroom size, the student personalities, what you want to achieve in the lesson, among others.
