A good selection of study materials can be helpful in teaching a successful course. The study material in a course can be divided between authentic material, created material, and textbooks. Authentic materials include any material not created for the purpose of helping the students learn English. Newspapers, radio programs, and fiction books are examples of authentic materials. While authentic materials can cover a broad range of topics and provide good examples of real-world use of the language, they do not take learners' levels into consideration and can include difficult language, especially for beginners. Created materials are materials created by a teacher to supplement a course, especially to replace material in a book. While they take effort on part of the teacher to create, they can be especially targeted to their students and address specific weaknesses and strengths of the class. Lastly, textbooks are important in providing a structure to the course, but with overuse they can make a class rigid and uninteresting.
