This unit was on the characteristics of a successful classroom. These include the physical behavior of the teacher (voice, gestures, eye contact, and use of student names), ways of grouping students together for activities, and the physical arrangement of the desks in the classroom, ways to effectively use teacher talk time, and how to establish rapport with the students and exercise discipline. Important principles in all of this include keeping the students relaxed in a friendly environment, keeping them engaged, having them be able to follow along with what is expected of them, and maintaining firm boundaries for what is acceptable.
