In unit 7, I leaned to know the receptive skills: Reading and Listening for language learners. I understand the reasons and motives for reading and listening can be classified into two categories: one is for a purpose, the other is for entertainment. When learning, students mostly use the first category reading/listening for a purpose. We need to know that, students have no choices here, but as teachers we can carefully select the topic, the text and create student interest for them to be engaged in the content they have to learn. When teaching listening and reading, we can teach students the following skills: making prediction, scanning for specific information, skimming for the gist, find detailed information and deduction skills. This would improve their thinking skill (mind) to process the printed words/ listening material and eventually lead to comprehension. We can help students build confidence by pre-teaching vocabulary and choose appropriate authentic and non-authentic text for teaching ELL learners. Also, using patchwork ESA phase is an effective way to teach listening and reading.
