In this unit, the four types of past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous) were described. For each of them, the structure, usages and common students' mistakes were explained. As in the case of the present tenses, the comprehension of past tenses is tremendously important for English teachers. This is because sometimes we use them instinctively based on our repetitive usage. Nevertheless, we should be able to explain tenses not only from our experience and practice using them, but from a complete knowledge of their structure.
