A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF UNIT “4” CONTENT & KNOWLEDGE GAINED BY ME. The content of this unit titled “TEACHING NEW LANGUAGE” covers the three language concepts: (a) VOCABULARY – here student need to know language {spelling, pronunciation, usage etc.}. (b) GRAMMER structure – Student need to know the language meaning, how it’s used, grammatical forms etc. (c) FUNCTION – include kind s of language use either formally\informally such as in Agreeing, Disagreeing, Inviting, Accepting etc. Having in mind the application of ESA methods to achieve the lesson target, using either one of three phases: 1- The Straight Arrow ESA lesson {Engage – Study – Activate]. 2- Boomerang ESA lesson {Engage – Activate1 –Study – Activate2}. 3- Patchwork ESA lesson: Engage ( ) Activate. Grammar\Vocabulary and Function all play a vital role in language learning in the sense that GRAMMER- serves as the “TREE TRUCK\BRANCHES” of a language. While VOCABULARY and FUNCTION are the LEAVES beautifying it. Therefore, there is need to get the language learners \ students be Exposed, understand it Meaning, how it’s Constructed and be able to put it into Practice and Produce it. There are some for selecting Vocabulary: Teachability, Need clear\ Visual language for new learner, Frequency\ Coverage, Appropriancy to the task and student etc. Also, student need to know about vocabulary items such as MEANING in terms of “what it means”, SPELLING in terms of “written”, PRONOUNCIATION in terms of “spoken”. In conclusion. Applying the ESA methods for teaching a new language, while using either one or all the three phases depend on the Teacher effectiveness to choose the appropriate type to suit the lesson in question…and lesson objective. E.g. ESA “Function” lesson using Boomerang phase will have the lesson below: Engage --- open talk in class about some favorite activities making them to tell their likeness or not …while teacher prompt to get student views.etc Activate --- students involve activities in pairs to know who those who liking or go for disliking, accepting or rejecting etc. Study --- Teacher \ Student listen to recorded dialogue to compare, analyze, correct pronunciations etc. and other study exercise to reinforce. Activate --- new language learnt to be display by the students in pairs vs ROLE PLAY to get the winner ….
