I learned a variety of assessments, and their advantages for use in the classroom. I have never seen the use of tutorials practiced in the last ten minutes of each week's lesson. It appears to be informal, but a important assessment for the teacher to evaluate how goals are being achieved, or what problems are actually hindering the learning of the language. I feel the evaluation by the students if done verbally might involve unnecessary peer pressure, and could be offending for both sides. In some schools placement tests are done outside of the teaching classroom, by school staff. I feel the teacher would benefit from viewing these, if time permitted. The placement test that was modeled in the text of unit 10, has the weakness of fill-in-blank statements which are very difficult for English learners. The diagnostic tests should be given at the beginning of the class, to see what skills the students already have acquired. The progress tests should be based on the course syllabus and given frequently, as most schools will require a formal testing to show progress. I was familiar with external tests, such as the TOEFL, required by most universities, and the TOEIC, for everyday workplace in Japan and Korea, and some in Europe. But I had never heard of the IELTS, which is for universities, employers, and immigration offices.
