I hadn't heard of "functions" as a category of language before, but it makes sense. Grammar and vocabulary are the foundation, then functions act as how English is really used. For example: What's the more polite way of making requests? What language is more informal? How can I politely agree or disagree with someone? It was also helpful having the ESA teaching model rehashed and some additional ideas as to how it can be applied with grammar, vocabulary, and function class objectives.
