The first unit provides a foundation for what makes a good language teacher and a good language learner. It also highlights the challenges that may arise when teaching different levels and ages. While good teachers come to the classroom with their own personal strengths and weaknesses, there are some general qualities that effective teachers all generally display. These include a positive, encouraging attitude, patience, kindness and fairness among students. Good teachers must also be good listeners (especially language teachers) and must possess the sensitivity necessary to correct students without discouraging or even offending them. Knowing when to step in and out of the spotlight takes a bit of practice and experience and varies between ages and levels. Therefore, a good teacher needs to be flexible and attentive to the needs of his or her current students. Good teachers are also organised and able to manage and lead the classroom. This means that teachers need to gain their students respect by demonstrating appropriate knowledge of the material, disciplining students when necessary, and assessing work in a fair manner. The job of a teacher is multifaceted and requires quite a variety of different skills. A teacher's job is made much easier when he or she is able to work with good learners. These are people who are motivated, willing to make mistakes and ask questions, and are good listeners themselves. The final part of Unit 1 dealt with language level classification systems and the challenges and benefits of working with different age groups. As I already have some experience working with both children and adults, I very much agree with what I have read. With the adults I appreciate not having to raise my voice and fight for attention, but the children tend to have more fun energy and are more playful. Mostly in reading this section I felt it important to note these differences when trying to determine which level and age best fits with my personality and particular set of strengths so that I can seek out teaching opportunities that are a nice fit for me and my students.
