Essential teaching tools and techniques that I learned from this lesson includes how to effectively manage, behave, and arrange a class that would be most conducive to learning. Giving individual attention is essential for those students who may not fully understand or cannot do the task but try to keep the other students occupied with tasks as well. Teacher talk time (TT) vs student talk time (ST) should be a balance but it will largely be dependent on the level of the students. There are several ways in which the teacher can utilize their presence and voice in the classroom in order to maintain discipline and produce an encouraging and relaxed classroom environment. These will maximize student production. A teacher can avoid too much Teacher Talk time and maximize student engagement by utilizing gestures. Teachers can reduce unnecessary talk time by being better prepared, organized, and planned for the lesson ahead. As well it is important to choose carefully and remain consistent with the language for explanations and instructions. Replace Teacher Talk time with gestures and pictures, children tend to be visual learners and use simple language so that you aren't being asked clarifying questions. Teachers may use their voice in order to communicate with students in order to effectively build rapport. Teachers may want to uses their presence and gestures more often when dealing with problem behaviors in the class. For example: simply stopping and looking at the student communicates a non-verbal cue to the student that will eventually grab their attention. Sometimes stronger action may be necessary.
