This unit provides techniques for teaching special groups such as beginners, individual students, children, business English, monolingual and multilingual classes. Firstly, teaching beginners requires special skills and psycology. The teacher needs to be aware of the needs of the students and have clear and realistic aims. Lessons should be as visual as possible and instructions should be simple and clear. Secondly, teaching individual students is usually not the same as teaching a group because there are certain activities that are impossible to do. Individual students are usually highly motivated and the teacher can focus on the students particular needs. 1-1 activities can include: short stories, articles from magazines, horoscope, etc. Thirdly, when teaching children, the teacher needs to be very patient and always give positive encouragement to enable the child develope a sense of self esteem. Since children usually have short attention spans, it is important to frequently change activities and keep them fun and exciting so as to stimulate their curosity. Fourthly, business English students also have different needs. It is important for the teacher to know their needs so as to prepare future lessons. One way to do so is through a Need Analysis questionnaire. When planning for business English lessons, the teacher should always consider the mood of the students (i.e. they are often tired), motivation, and language levels. Lastly, a multilingual class is usually made up of students from different nationalities. They have only one common language, which is English. As such they are forced to communicate with each other in English and not their native language. A monolingual class, on the other hand usually takes place in the students' country. Though it does not offer the same advantage as a multilingual class, students speak the same language and are likely to have the same difficulties, which is not the case with a multilingual class. To make it easier for students to learn English, the teacher should avoid using the students' native language.
