This unit gives a detailed explanation about conditionals and reported speech and provides teaching ideas which can be used in a lesson to help students practice these areas. Conditionals are sentences which refer to past, present and future possibilities usually with consequences. They can be zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals. Zero conditional refers to undeniable actions and facts. It is formed as follows: 'if/when + present tense, present tense'. First Conditional refers to a real situation in the future that can be possible or even certain once the condition has been satisfied. It is formed as follows: 'if + present simple, will/can/might/should'. Second Conditional talks about hypothetical, unreal present or future situations that are presently not true and is unlikely ever to be true. It is formed as follows: 'if + past simple, would/could/might + base form of verb'. Third conditional communicates a hypothetical past action or non-action and a hypothetical past consequence. It is formed as follows: 'if + past perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle'. Lastly, mixed conditonal is a past action or state and a hypothetical present consequence. It's form is as follows: 'if + past perfect, would + base form'. Reported speech is a transformation of direct speech. The tense, pronoun and time expression used in the direct speech is usually changed to form a reported speech. This unit describes such changes and also provides exceptional cases.
