In this unit I learned about the parts of speech in the English language. Not having had strong grammar training in school, I found this particularly challenging. I also grew to appreciate how difficult it must be to learn English as a second language. There are many more exceptions to the rules. For example, I was especially struck by how many irregular verbs there were in English. I thought memorizing the irregular verbs in Spanish was hard! This unit made me think about what my role in the classroom would look like. With more grammar training I hope to become better at explaining the rules to students. However, this will be further complicated if I have to explain it in another language. My take away is that my role in grammar education may rest more heavily on being a model for my students than on lecturing at them.
