In this unit modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice are covered. The modal auxiliary verbs are given, and the basic rules are discussed. A useful chart is given explaining the uses and the forms of all the modals. Ideas for teaching modals are given. The passive voice is elaborated, and a table is given on how to form the passive voice from different tenses. In the passive voice, the focus of the sentence is shifted away from the doer. Common errors were listed, and ideas for teaching were given. There are three categories of clauses, namely independent clauses, dependent clauses, and relative clauses. Relative clauses are dependent clauses that modify the noun, and can be defining or non-defining. From this unit I learnt that non-defining relative clauses generally use commas. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs, and can be intransitive, transitive separable, or intransitive inseparable. Phrasal verbs can be difficult for students to understand, and should be learnt as a vocabulary item, and used in class discussion when possible.
