This unit focuses on productive skills, where productive means a skill where the students are actually required to produce language, rather than receive it. The productive skills are speaking and writing. Both are used for communication, though speaking tends to be focused on and tends to be slightly easier for students. It tends to be focused on in the classroom because many teachers don't like the idea of a lot of quiet time (which would be required for writing activities) in the classroom and so tend to relegate writing activities to homework, which students often times don't do. Additionally, speaking tends to be an easier skill for students to acquire because they can confront mistakes immediately and are often given instruction and guidance on correct usage and vocabulary from the outset (by the person, people with whom they are speaking), whereas with writing, this does not tend to be the case. Students have to be more accurate in writing, plus there are a whole host of additional potential problems for students including different grammatical structure, different vocabulary, spelling, layout, form, punctuation, and handwriting. There are a number of ways to teach both writing and speaking skills, but for both the teacher will need to have a goal for the lesson and for the students already planned out, typically a lot of time needs to be allocated for students to prepare for the activate stage of these lessons so that they will be comfortable speaking and participating, care needs to be taken in coming up with a topic which the students find interesting and in developing more interest in the topic during the lesson.
