This lesson covered modals, relative clauses, phrasal verbs and passive voice. With modals, the chart covering the usages was extremely helpful. Although this is common sense, it is something I have struggled with explaining to foreign English learners. Specifically, the varying politeness levels as this is something that is often more well defined and formal in other languages. The nuance of these words can be difficult for non-native speakers to understand. Similarly, the passive voice and the implications of using it are something that native speakers don’t even think about, but which could really trip up ESL learners. Phrasal verbs are difficult because of the noun and pronoun placement in the transitive separable form. Otherwise, I think these can almost be taught as vocabulary.
