This unit gives an overview of modal verbs, the passive voice, and relative clauses. These can be very confusing to students, as many of these structures look very similar to each other and to other structures. For example, many tenses and passive voice require different forms of the verb "to be" which hold quite specific meanings. If one word is missing or in the wrong tense, the sentence can sound incorrect. My takeaway is that when teaching these structures, it would be useful to make distinctions between easily confused structures and words, and to take their instruction rather slowly. It would also be wise to provide students with enough exposure to them to be able to discern their nuances.
