Having only been a English composition instructor in the past, I found this unit very interesting in the way it differs from how one might teach a writing course versus a speaking course. I enjoyed learning about the subtle nuances between how a person receives information while reading, versus how he or she might while listening. I have studied the idea of perception and sensation a great deal and in particular, how what we sense can only be better informed by what we perceive. I thought of that research when the unit discussed context and how something that is familiar to me (recognizing that Cowboys and Bears are football teams) might not be easily recognizable to someone else. It also reminded me of the first ESL English composition course I had to teach where I struggled in the beginning because a lot of the references, ice-breakers, humor, and anecdotes I had relied on in the past simply didn't work in that audience. I was able to recover because, thankfully, the World Cup was going on that year and everyone in the room at least has some understanding/appreciation for football/soccer. I had to quickly switch almost all of my examples to center around the World Cup. I realized that I never want to be caught unprepared like that again, and this unit helped solidify that sentiment because if anyone in the class didn't particularly care about the games, regardless if they knew about them or not, I likely bored them to tears and they likely got less out of the course. Going forward I will try to stick to broader examples that more people can identify with (eg., favorite foods, holidays, places to go) and vary them so that everyone stays as engaged as possible.
