This unit covers the basics of classroom management. This includes the uses of gestures, the voice and eye contact; how one may group students and the pros and cons to different set-ups; how to arrange a classroom and what to consider when arranging it; the importance of teacher talk time but also how to reduce unnecessary amounts of this; key points regarding board writing; giving instructions to students; how to build rapport with students and why this is useful; and finally how to maintain and enforce discipline when this is necessary. This lesson has been very useful for me, as I often have to teach large groups students in a public school and, whilst I enjoy it, I do find this quite challenging. Although some of the content here covers points which I currently make use of, a lot of content in this lesson has provided a range of fresh ideas on how to keep the students disciplined and engaged, as well as ideas to vary the set-up which can help to maintain their interest; in particular, varying the group and pair make-up to make sure students get to work with different personalities. These are ideas which I will definitely strive to include in my future lessons, particularly with larger student groups, but which also apply to my smaller classes, namely finding a suitable balance between standing at the front and taking a seat to regulate the dominance of my role in the classroom. The points related to discipline were also very helpful to digest, as I feel that I am sometimes not firm enough and need to find better ways to be firmer with students whilst not also going over the top. The ideas provided here should allow me to pursue this in a more effective fashion.
