This unit gave an overview of the four aspects of the past tense: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. As with the unit on present tenses, it really highlights how specific the English language can be about the timeline of events just from its tense system. It is clear how these can be confusing for students, especially when usage can have such subtle differences, like with past continuous and past present continuous (describing an action-in-progress happening at some point in the past vs. describing an action that started in the past and has been continuing up to some point in the past, and may have continued past that point).
