The focus of this unit - Teachers and Students - is to examine the attributes, roles, and responsibilities of both students and teachers. Areas covered include: what makes a good teacher and good student, teachers' roles and responsibilities, young learners are broken into three categories; 2 to 7 years, 8 to 13 years, and 14 to 18 years, while students over 18 are classified as adult learners. The unit also focuses on understanding the realities of student learning (what students bring to the table/classroom) and how these realities manifest among the various student learning groups; student learning factors/challenges such as nervousness, awareness, motivation, behavior problems, learning experience, culture, etc. Also, this unit focuses on distinctions between different levels of ability in the English language, detailing the six language levels: beginner, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. Additionally, we are introduced to the Common European Framework for establishing levels of language ability, which broadly equate to the previously stated language levels. Lastly, the unit discusses motivation as it relates to the many reasons why students have decided to attend English language classes; specifically, the common reasons: future career opportunities, interest in languages, for travel purposes, etc.
