Understanding text or spoken word goes far beyond what we hear or see.
I, for example, can understand far more Spanish that I hear or read than I can communicate.
For me the issue in speaking Spanish is the proper placing of words in order to make a meaningful sentence.
I can thus see how it would be equally difficult for English students to do the same. It is finding the balance between the known and unknown vocabulary and shortening the gap through learning and practicing that makes us stronger in the chosen language.
