As with present tense, we have different forms of past tense. Past simple, which is used to describe an action that is already completed. Past continuous, to state or describe an action that was taking place in the past at a specific time. The past perfect, to describe an action that started in the past and concluded before another action took place and finally the past perfect continuous which is basically to describe a past action in the past.
