Unit 7 covers approaches to teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. There is a review of the straight arrow vs. boomerang vs. patchwork structure of ESA (engage, study, activate). The examples show frameworks for typical lessons which can be adjusted based on the topic and student level. Some common themes are open discussion during engage, individual drill work during study, and pairs/small groups role playing during activate. The other point emphasized in the unit is a consideration of why the lesson is being taught, ie vocabulary appropriacy, grammar meanings, and language functions like requesting or formality.
