Modals (should, must, might, need, will, etc.) can be used in conjunction with an infinitive verb form in order to express a certain degree of certainty/uncertainty ('may' signaling more certainty than 'might'), as well as expressions of obligation ('must' signaling more of an obligation than 'should'). In addition, phrasal verbs and relative clauses can be used to put emphasis on a sentence's object or on its agent, using passive voice for the former case and active for the latter. Emphasizing the difference in formality is important to note, as some modals are more formal (i.e. 'may' or 'might') and should be taught with activities that establish contexts of varying formality. This way, students can learn to navigate social situations with a deeper cultural understanding of what is appropriate to say when, and with whom.
