COURSEBOOKS AND LEARNING MATERIALS Authentic materials - can be defined as materials written in the target language and used in the class unedited. Reasons for use of authentic materials are; * improves students' skill and confidence when they understand it. * they are more interesting and motivating because they are real. * they can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students. Created materials - are designed by the teacher to supplement or replace coursebook materials and graded to the level of the students. E.g, * crossword * word search puzzle * flashcards * picture story * gap-fill activities * role-play cards. Coursebooks - these consists of a set of materials which include; student's book, workbook, cassettes, teacher's book and videos. Some advantages of using coursebooks are: * it is easier and less time consuming to supplement than to design and create a syllabus from scratch. * it offers continuity and progression. * the teacher's book is particularly helpful to the inexperienced teacher. * they are tested and tried before publication. Disadvantages: * does not always fit the specific needs and interest of all the class members. * they are written for a general audience rather than a specific group of students. * stops teachers from being creative and search for materials which will motivate and interest their class. Options for coursebooks use are, * omit, * replace, * supplement and * adapt. The teacher should consider the following factors before using a coursebook, * price * availability. * design. * methodology. * skills. * difficulty. * topic. From this unit, I learnt that although coursebooks are necessary and important, the teacher should not base his/her whole lessons on it, but instead should, in addition to the coursebook, create materials that will motivate his/her students.
