Unit Seven details different ways a teacher can structure their lesson plans. The unit explains what activities are appropriate at different stages of a lesson – e.g. it is not appropriate to engage the class with a debate before the students have the new vocabulary and grammar rules clear in their minds. The unit gives lesson examples, showing in detail how you can use the ENGAGE, STUDY, ACTIVATE building blocks to design a lesson suitable in relation the material you want to teach and the students to whom want to teach it. There is quite a bit of flexibility – three opinions, The Boomerang, The Straight Arrow and The Patchwork, but it important that a teacher is aware of appropriate activities for each section of a lesson.
The unit also covers important things to keep in mind when teaching vocabulary and grammar, you don’t want to overwhelm your students with the origins of a word, and with grammar it’s a good idea to explain the differences in the way English speakers speak and write e.g. “I’m gonna be late” instead of “I’m going to be late”.
